Abstract :This paper critically reviews various English materials for extensive reading and exhaustively discusses their advantages and disadvantages, and then, on the basis of the discussion, argues for the use of English Manga as materia1 for an extensive reading program Manga is not only attractive and interesting to students, but it also has myriads of advantages as reading material. It is demonstrated that English Manga is very easy for students to read and understand because it originates from their first language's culture and offers visual cues to facilitate the comprehension of the story. It is also claimed that reading Manga gives students an unparalleled opportunity to familiarize themselves with diverse colloquial expressions in English. Thus Manga is shown to be quite suitable for an extensive reading program, where reading for pleasure is the first and foremost priority. In the implementation of an extensive reading program, we must always bear in mind that In the absence of interesting texts, very little is possible (Williams, 1986).
